On 31 January 2007, the late Mr Jeremiah Harman of the farm Buffelshoek on the Kommiessiedrift road became the victim of a farm attack. Four men were subsequently arrested in connection with the murder and robbery of Mr Harman, namely Isaac Mitchel Mondlani, Francisco Chuvonge, Johannes Maluleka and Mhalu Vulani. Chuvongo and Maluleka later escaped from lawful custody, and warrants of arrest were issued in their names. On 28 October 2008, the case against Isaac Mitchel Mondlani was withdrawn as there was no prima facie case against him, while Mhalu Vulani was found guilty on seven charges on 25 March 2009. Vulani was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Mr Harman, to five years’ imprisonment on a count of robbery, 15 years’ imprisonment on a count of robbery with aggravating circumstances, three years’ imprisonment on the first count of unlawful possession of a firearm, three years’ imprisonment on the second count of unlawful possession of a firearm, three years’ imprisonment on the third count of unlawful possession of a firearm, and two years’ imprisonment on the fourth count of unlawful possession of a firearm. The case was investigated by D/Insp D Smit of Phokeng Organised Crime.
